Business Central - Inspecting Pages and Data - How to hide it when necessary
Hello Visitor of my blog page! I hope you had a wonderful day and energized for another post. I will shift a little bit out of the “What’s new in BC?” series and change it up a little.
Business Central has a slew of helpful tips and features. One of those helpful tips is “Inspecting Pages” in Business Central. Now some of you who have been in the Dynamics world, you’ll probably remember this as “About Page”. This feature tool allows you to see what the underlying data from that page is, beyond what the page allows you to see. This also provides you visibility to inspect other fields that may not have been exposed to the user. This is helpful to identify and validate field records that a user may not see. However, there may be security reasons where you do not want a user to see the rest of the underlying records, only allowing them to see what their role is.
Before we discuss how to prevent this, let’s look at how you can access the “Inspect Pages and Data”. From any page, click on the question mark (?) from the top right-hand side of the page. Then scroll down until you see “Help & Support” and click the link. You should then see the “Information” page with Help & Support. Or you can just use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+F1.
From the Information page, you will see a link for “Inspect pages and data”. This will enable the “Page Inspection” column, found on the right side of the browser. If the user’s permission allows, they should be able to see “Table Fields”, all fields that doesn’t exist on the page, but it exists within the table.
See the example below, where you can see the “Search Name” field, but it is not available from the Customer Page.
Another example of this is the item card. Although you can hide the field from the main page, the user could still easily open the “Page Inspection” and get the rest of the table field data.
As an administrator, you can control the “Page Inspection” pane by assigning or configuring the permissions that the user has. By preventing users to use “Page Inspection”, you can remove or limit the Execute permission on the System object 5330 and 1350.
