Business Central (v21) - Make that Variant Mandatory

"Growing old is Mandatory, growing up is optional." -Walt Disney
Variant Code Mandatory is on Business Central 2022 Release Wave 2, but making that choice to turn it on is optional.

With Business Central 2022 Release Wave 2 coming, general availability in October, a new feature variant will be added. Making that Variant Mandatory! There’s been countless times where if an item have multiple variant codes, data entry mistakes can happen.

Now how do I make this happen? Well, there are two areas that you can activate this capability. Before we dive into those areas, there are three options:

  • Default: The setting from Inventory Setup applies to this item.

  • No: Users are not required to specify a variant for this item.

  • Yes: If one or more variants exists for this item, users need to specify. If they don’t, you can’t transact against the document.

To active, you will need to navigate to Inventory Setup page and toggle the Variant Mandatory if Exists boolean field.

Inventory Setup - Variant Mandatory if Exists

If you decide to maintain or override the global setting you set from the Inventory Setup, then you can maintain this for specific items from the item card.

Item Card - Variant Mandatory if Exists

If a user attempts to create a sales order for an item that have a variant code, it will block them from posting a transaction.
